Opotiki to the Cape: photo-diary
(December 2015)
My mate Noel and I spent ages watching this fellow hunt big juicy worms.
Gray warbler.
Mermaid on the Rock!
Skylark
A friendly little chaffinch.
We got invited to this end-of-year break-up concert at the local Maori school – a wonderful experience!
Oh, look at those eyes!
This little cutie’s got the look, eh what?
This beautiful old villa used to be a nunnery – was dismantled and shifted to the Coast from Gisborne. We parked on the lawn for a couple of nights.
A giant pohutukawa – more than 350 years old and (reputedly) the largest speciman in the world.
A lovely little glade halfway up the hill to the lighthouse.
Some of the 750 steps – gasp! – climbing up to the lighthouse at East Cape.
The famous East Cape lighthouse.
A nice “do-up” Robyn and I are thinking of buying.
Beautiful old Maori church with intricate carvings and panel-work.
One of our favourite stop-overs – any closer to the water and we would’ve been in it!

Hope you had a joy-filled Christmas with your family. We did. Thank you for the fantastic photo diary of your trip to East Cape. It looks very unpopulated but it may just be your choice of subjects. I think the bird photos are exceptional. Wishing you another great year on the road. (and in very populated China – wish we could be with you but not well enough)
God bless and protect you both – Claire M
